I did my own research on biomimicry, however, once I started this course I realize how much I still had to learn. Meet your instructor

Jamie Miller

Hi, I'm Jamie Miller. I'm the first Global Director of Biomimicry, helping B+H, an international design company bring biomimicry to the built environment. I'm also the President of Biomimicry Frontiers, an award-winning consultancy, and the Founder of the Biomimicry Commons, which Fast Company named a "World Changing Idea." I hold a PhD in engineering, which focused on systems-level biomimicry and urban resilience. I was the Director of OCAD University's Biomimicry Program and I've been a leader in the field since 2004. I was originally trained and educated by Janine Benyus and continue to work with Indigenous Elders to deepen my understanding of the principles of biomimicry while focusing on its practical application. My mission is to elevate the genius of nature and to help inspire two billion biomimics to shift the system toward greater harmony with the natural world.

WE ARE NOT GOING TO SOLVE TODAY'S PROBLEMS WITH THE SAME THINKING THAT CREATED THEM

Resilience literature calls today's problems "wicked problems" because they have no precedent for how to solve them. They require bold new thinking that moves far beyond the thinking of the past.

IT'S TIME FOR A NEW MODEL

How we interact with the world is based on our understanding of it. For several hundred years, the dominant cultural paradigm in the West was based on separation and control of nature (Newtonian Science), of the belief that unlimited technological and economic growth were the keys to health and well-being, and that nature existed for our unlimited consumption (Material Paradigm). We believed that we could use stored energy to control and conserve our systems. But now, we are learning that conserving our systems is both energy intensive and potentially disastrous. Although these paradigms have helped us become a dominant species, the attachment to outdated thinking has put our species at risk of large-scale collapse. It's time we look for a new model. One that looks outside of human exceptionalism. Think, that on an evolutionary time scale we have only just arrived on this planet. It is time that we look to the Elders of this planet for how to be a contribution to our place.
